As you are all probably aware, Rockstar officially announced GTA V today. However, all the chaps over at Rockstar teased us with was a logo and the date of when the initial trailer for what is most likely the most highly anticipated title right now.
Fortunately enough for you though, due to a chance encounter with an industry professional about two weeks ago, we here at StickTwiddlers are able to bring you a brief glimpse of what gameplay animation in GTA V will most probably look like.
Ready? Watch this video…
Now some of you may recognise this as action game Eight Days, a title that was being developed by SCE London Studio for the PlayStation 3 around four to five years ago and was recently put on hold. Now you are probably asking what this has to do with the announcement of GTA V and it’s gameplay and it’s here that I have to take you back to my random encounter.
The industry professional I met was showing me clips of Eight Days on their laptop and after commenting about how impressed I was with the dynamic movement of the characters and the integration with the environment, they let slip that one of the animators who worked on Eight Days is now currently working on GTA V.
After a bit of investigative journalism, I can only assume that this animator is Jim Jagger. Jim’s resume on his personal site states that between April 2006 and September 2009, he worked as the Principal Animator on Eight Days, specifically in the role of Character & Animation Director.
If you look back to his resume, we can now see that Jim Jagger is currently employed since October 2009 by Rockstar North as the Lead Animator on a T.B.A project. I think it’s safe to assume that that T.B.A will soon read ‘GTA V’.
So there we have it. We could be seeing some truly incredible things in terms of character animation and environment interaction from GTA V and it’s no surprise that this is going to be one of the most talked about and anticipated titles. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the trailer brings on November 2nd.
