Remember last week when I said that “excitement fills me as I wonder what has happened to Outland during my absence. Hopefully, I will find the journey from levels 60 to 70 just as engaging and exciting as I did back in Vanilla World of Warcraft, if not more so.” Yeah, past Alan is an idiot.
Well, it had to end at some point. In contrast to the excitement and impressive changes which I have encountered during my levelling journey, Outlands is frankly fucking shit. It was probably false hope to assume that Blizzard would give Outland the same treatment that Azeroth received, but I would have at least expected a few changes to be made. But no. Nothing. Zip. Nada. It’s exactly the same as it was four bloody years ago. To say that I found the entire experience underwhelming would be an understatement.
While the increased levelling speed as meant that I have not had to hang around for too long (indeed, I actually hit level 70 after completing just two zones) the process was draining. I have no idea how Blizzard expect people who are brand new to the game to progress past this point. After experiencing some of the finest design that Blizzard has to offer, Outland appears on the horizon as a boring, poorly conceived barrier. While Azeroth was a walk in the park, and pushed you to keep on playing, Outland does the opposite.
To attempt to stem to flow of boredom, I decided to try a little bit of PvP (Player Vs Player). I’ll go on record as saying that I’ve never really been interested in this, or even been any good at. However, I still enjoy attempting to melt faces every so often, and it seemed like a good idea. Wrong! Every match I was unfortunate enough to find myself in was full of ‘Twinks’ i.e characters which are only used for PvP at certain levels, normally with gear which far out classes people levelling through the content as normal. *sigh*
Finally, however, it’s over. Level 70 hit me like a truck, and it’s time to make my way to the icy realm of Northrend, take on those pesky Scourge and work my way to level 80. Hopefully it wont be as mind numbing as Outland. If it is, then it could possibly spell the end of my return to WoW.
