Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that removes the barriers set by traditional investors and banks that make turning ideas into reality more difficult and risky.

The Kickstarter platform allows creators to share their vision directly with consumers and those that share a similar passion. The platform has been used to create music albums, fashion items, electronic devices, toys, documentaries, and much more. The limits of what can be done truly only depends on the creator’s understanding of the scope of the project and the ability to follow through.

How it works is simple. A creator outlines what they want to create, sets a timeline for getting it done, and how much it will cost to happen. Then you, the curious seeker, either “pre-purchases” whatever the project is offering, donate a dollar amount or purchase other items associated with the project. Only when enough money is collected through these means is the project “funded.” Projects can continue without full funding, however. If they aren’t funded and the creator decides to back off the project, you get your money back.

In exchange for this, Kickstarter takes a five percent fee from the creator. The benefit here is that in exchange for the 5%, the creators retain sole ownership of the project. This is the opposite of how banks and investors operate, which may impose interest or attempt to keep ownership and decision-making power when it isn’t wanted.

Just keep in mind that everything doesn’t always work out. Sometimes projects don’t get off the ground, or they fall apart due to complications, cost overruns, or quality issues.

Unfortunately, once you give your money to the creator and the project gets underway, you won’t get a refund (unless the creator approves it) if you don’t get what was promised. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen very often.

Wondering to expect after funding a Kickstarter project? Just take a look these projects we love to get an idea.
